MAGA MATH
Will the House GOP refuse to pass Trumpās āone big, beautifulā tax cut bill?Ā Itās looking very possibleā¦Ā because they donāt want to set off a political firestorm that torches their tiny majority by cutting healthcare to poor people in their own states.
- House Republicans are expected to vote as soon as tonight on a massive spending plan for the next fiscal year. Theyāre planning to find $2 trillion to cut ā and about $800 billion of that would likely come from Medicaid over the next decade. More than 72 million poor and disabled Americans rely on the health insurance program.
- To be clear: This planĀ would help payĀ for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, largely for the rich, and for increased border spending. Gutting Medicaid isnāt explicitly outlined in the plan, but Republican lawmakers believe thereās no other way to save that much money without taking an axe (or aĀ chainsaw, if you will) to the program. The idea makes some Republicans queasy. āSlashing Medicaid would have serious consequences, particularly in rural and predominantly Hispanic communities,ā eight GOP lawmakersĀ wrote in a letterĀ to House Speaker Mike Johnson this month. Other Republicans in moderate districts have also raised concerns that Medicaid could be gutted.
- House Speaker Mike JohnsonĀ shot down any hopeĀ that the plan would be changed to address concerns about Medicaid cuts. āThereās nothing specific about Medicaid in the resolution,ā he said yesterday. āThe legislation comes later, so this is the important first start.ā In private, Johnson and othersĀ searched, fruitlessly, for a Plan B.
Republicans have a razor-thin majority in the House.Ā This single issue could change that, some of them warn.
- The MAGA math aināt mathing. Johnson can only afford to lose a single vote if Democrats remain united against the plan⦠and at least four RepublicansĀ opposedĀ the bill as of this afternoon. Even MAGA Godfather Steve Bannon is skeptical of the Medicaid cuts ā or, at least, the political consequences for the GOP. āJust canāt take a meat axe to it, although I would love to,ā BannonĀ recently saidĀ on his podcast.
- In typical fashion, Trump has both urged Congress to pass this planĀ andĀ promised that he wonāt ātouchā Medicaid, Medicare or Social Security. So nobody really knows WTF heās really thinking. Leadership!
- The left is united in this battle: āMedicaid provides 40% of the funding for community health centers. Medicaid supports 2 out of 3 people in nursing homes. Medicaid provides health care to 41 million children,ā Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)Ā said today.Ā āTrump and his Republican friends want to enact massive cuts to the program. We won’t let them.ā
- MAGAworld is praying that the math will magically add up. A reporter asked Johnson today: Can you say unequivocally that down the line, there won’t be cuts to Medicaid programs?Ā He responded: āMedicaid is hugely problematic because it has a lot of fraud, waste, and abuse.ā
- Okay, sure, thereĀ areĀ problemsĀ with the program, just like most government initiatives (and literally everything in life). Thatās why we have watchdogs to find fraud and abuse ā though TrumpĀ fired more than a dozenĀ of them. Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) warned about the dangers of haphazard cuts: āAt what point do you stop cutting into the fat and start cutting into the bone? You canāt pull the rug out from millions of people,ā heĀ told Politico.
Congress has to pass a spending plan by March 14,Ā otherwise the government could shut down. What a good start to Trump 2.0!

Donald Trumpās top federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C. refused to signĀ an arrest warrant for MAGA Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a 27-year-old woman in the city. The details are still fuzzy, but this is the same prosecutor who threatened toĀ go after anyone who talks shit about Elon Musk.
Nearly 40 percent of the government contracts canceledĀ by Muskās DOGE arenāt expected to save any money⦠according to the departmentās own data. Thatās because much of the money has already been spent: āItās like confiscating used ammunition after itās been shot when thereās nothing left in it. It doesnāt accomplish any policy objective,ā one expert told the Associated Press. Perfect efficiency!
Musk said federal workers have a āsecond chanceā to justify their workĀ ā or theyāll be fired. That came shortly after the White House blocked his plan to fire any workers who didnāt email DOGE about what theyāve been doing. āFailure to respond a second time will result in termination,ā Musk wrote on X. Great morale boost! Even DOGE employeesĀ donāt want to work for you anymore.
House Democrats estimate that almost 6,000 veteransĀ have been fired by DOGE since Trump took office. Nothing says America First like firing the vets!
A group of military contractors brought a $25 billion plan to TrumpĀ that would involve deporting 12 million people by the 2026 midterms, Politico reports. It would stand up a small private āarmyā of citizens allowed to make arrests, āprocessing campsā on military bases, and a private fleet of 100 planes, per a document obtained by the outlet.
The White House said that itāll determine which reporters and outletsĀ will have access to the press pool ā a rotating position that allows journalists to shadow the president in the Oval Office, on board Air Force One, and in other spaces with limited room. For decades, an independent group of journalists had decided who gets access. āThis move tears at the independence of a free press in the United States,ā said Eugene Daniels, president of White House Correspondentsā Association board. Yeah, and it means some outlet with a name like āAmerica First Freedom MAGA-Nation TVā will get to ask all the questions.
The Trump administration plans to keep the Consumer Financial Protection BureauĀ open in some capacity, according to a new court filing. The organization protects against major companies taking advantage of average people ā and now Elon Musk!
