Associate Editor

 

Crooked Media is seeking an LA or DC based Associate Editor who will be responsible for curating, drafting, and sending What A Day, Crooked Media’s mission-driven, nightly newsletter. Successful candidates must be able to write clearly and concisely about a wide range of current events on deadline; track and analyze the most important stories that are driving the news cycle on an ongoing basis; and synthesize them into witty and accessible summaries for an audience of readers who care about the news and direction of the country, but don’t spend all day online.

 

Day-to-day duties include:

  • Track daily news cycles across a diverse array of outlets and verticals as they develop each day on social media, in-house Slack channels, reporting, and other relevant tools.  
  • Provide the editor with a tentative outline of the newsletter each morning, and work with the editor throughout the afternoon as needed to finalize a draft.  
  • Curate and analyze news items – especially political items – in a way that captures the informative, entertaining, and mission-driven voice of What A Day and Crooked Media.
  • Submit a complete draft to the editor at the same time each afternoon, with proposed subject lines and subheadlines.
  • Oversee the copy-editing and fact-checking of the draft.
  • Build a template for the newsletter in the CMS 
  • Migrate the final text into the CMS and send the newsletter with the goal of completing the process each day by 8 p.m. ET

Candidate must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • 1-4 years in a writing position
  • Facility with social media, fluency in current affairs
  • Self-motivated, reliably able to hit deadlines
  • Sense of humor 
  • Must submit two published clips

Media Strategist

 

Crooked Media is looking to hire an LA-based media rockstar for the role of Media Strategist. The Strategist will play a key role in the Crooked internal Sales and Strategy teams by managing day-to-day client services and strategy generation to efficiently and creatively execute campaigns.

Duties will span the life of the sales cycle, offering the candidate a chance to participate in proposal creation, execution, and post-sale reporting and renewal activity. Crooked Media’s primary inventory is bespoke audio advertisements across podcasts, but it also includes newsletter sponsorship, event integration, and premium video sponsorship.

Ideal candidates will have 3-5 years of digital media experience. Excellent client service skills, a background in media strategy and plan packaging and organizational skills are a must. Knowledge of the Crooked Media offering and a passion for the mission are a plus.

This job reports to the VP of Brand Partnerships and collaborates with Sales Operations and Brand Strategy.

 

Day-to-day duties include:

  • Generate media plans and sponsorship proposals for podcasts, newsletters, event integration, and video (Microsoft Excel / Powerpoint or Keynote)
  • Manage the advertising partner vetting process
  • Maintain the schedule for booked ads and available ad inventory
  • Work with Crooked Creative Services, Sales and Strategy to fashion bespoke ad packages and custom copy on a case-by-case basis
  • Coordinate the gathering, circulation and approval of ad copy for upcoming ads in podcasts and newsletters
  • Review all ad copy to ensure it mirrors the appropriate Crooked voice and offer revision suggestions if needed.
  • Manage the insertion order process and client communication around said process
  • Maintain internal filing system of client-related documents (Google Suite) and Pipedrive CRM
  • Communicate effectively and diplomatically with clients and internal teams on a day-to-day basis
  • Create kick-off call/kick-off email agendas and timelines
  • Create internal and external timelines for campaigns
  • Create post reporting documents (PPT / Keynote) with insights and recommendations
  • Function as a Crooked representative to clients in a friendly and professional manner that encourages re-buys
  • Work with finance to reconcile client billing
  • Contribute to additional sales projects that require research, deck development or proactive response on a case by case basis

Candidate must have:

  • 3-5 years experience in a client-facing, project management or ad sales marketing role, preferably with a focus on branded content, podcasts or video
  • Varied client experience. A range from Fortune 500 clients to smaller B2B clients is preferred but not necessary.

Managing Producer, Narrative

 

We’re looking for an experienced producer to join our development and production team, based in Los Angeles. This is an extremely varied role that will be tasked to help create new concepts, new formats and bring new voices to audio.

The Managing Producer, Narrative must be comfortable working on a wide variety of shows – from daily production to narrative documentary – and must switch between show formats with comfort and excitement. You’ll be involved in writing, editing and mixing and be trusted to listen for qualities that will captivate listeners.

 

Day-to-day duties include:

  • Brainstorm, research and shape concepts for new shows along with evaluating shows that are being pitched
  • Oversee Crooked communication with each project’s teams including hosts, production staff and researchers throughout development process
  • Oversee production calendar and budgets on behalf of Crooked, serve as connective tissue between Crooked and each shows production on all assigned shows
  • Provide timely and in depth edits on scripts and mixes on story structure, assist in writing when necessary
  • Plan field producing and reporting trips in collaboration with producers
  • Find, pre-interview, and book guests
  • Oversee the arranging for studio recordings and tape syncs and work with the finance team on budgets.

Candidate must have:

  • A minimum of four years of experience producing audio for radio or podcast
  • A journalism background
  • An ability to listen to raw tape, and identify the perfect details, the need-to-know plot points, and the need-to-hear moments that make a story
  • Experience scripting 15-20 minute audio stories
  • Proficiency in field recording
  • Proficiency in creating assemblies in ProTools
  • An eye for detail and self-direction

 

 

 

Production Management & Accounting (Temp)

 

Los Angeles based, Crooked Media, Inc., seeking an extremely detail oriented and organized professional with Production Management & Accounting experience to join our team for a 6 month term. Candidate must be a team player and able to handle a high volume of paperwork quickly and accurately. Self-motivated and able to follow through on assigned responsibilities as well as able to think ahead and utilize problem-solving skills. Experience with corporate accounting/finance a plus.

 

Day-to-day duties include: 

  • Assisting Production with budget creation and projections. Create budgets and summaries that provide metrics and data that can be shared broadly to ensure cross functional alignment and well-informed decision making.
  • Partner with the cross functional teams to create and manage production schedules
  • Provide and present clear, accurate and timely production planning scenarios and analysis to both Producers and cross functional teams during the life cycle of a show/film/tv show/documentary.
  • Ascertain and solve budgeting and staffing issues.
  • Collaborate with Producers to quickly estimate and evaluate production health against milestones and data metrics.
  • Adapt to changing scenarios, anticipate problems and recommend solutions to creative executives and producers.
  • Comply with all policies and procedures for: 
    • Vendor and contractor setup 
    • Purchase Orders
    • Invoices and time-card approvals.
  • Review, reconcile, and submit invoices for payment
  • Executing and managing the actualization of production budgets on a weekly basis
  • Preparing and reviewing production related cost reporting as well as variance explanations
  • Contributing to the annual budget allocation process

Candidate must have:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in Production Accounting, specifically working on Limited Time Series
  • Familiarity with the Podcast Industry in general, and specifically, Crooked Media programming
  • Proficient in basic office applications: Microsoft office (e.g. excel, word, PPT)

  • Experience with CA labor laws and entertainment payroll

News and Comedy Producer – Daily News Podcast (Temp)

 

Crooked Media is launching a daily news podcast to help people start every day with a rundown of the stories that affect our lives and what each of us can do about it. The show will break down complicated issues in a way that informs everyone, from political junkies to the rest of us — who can only take so much news on the way to work because we live in a political nightmare factory. The show will be informative, fun to listen to, comedic, and spur political engagement amongst our audience.

We are looking for a talented producer to help us create this show from Crooked HQ in Los Angeles. The ideal candidate has a passion for helping people understand the news in creative ways, has strong editorial judgement, a sense of humor or background in comedy, and works well under pressure.

This position requires working an afternoon & evening shift of 3pm-11pm, subject to change. Sunday-Thursday.

 

Day-to-day duties include:

  • Producing segments and developing new recurring show segments that mix news, comedy, and explanatory journalism, and give listeners necessary context to understand the major themes in news and politics today
  • Monitoring the news, pitching ideas, researching, fact checking and writing scripts, jokes, games about topical issues
  • Shaping the voice and tone of the show
  • Daily and long-term show planning
  • Booking studio time and booking guests
  • Field production and reporting
  • Pulling clips and editing audio
  • Filling in for Senior Producer as needed

Candidate must have:

  • 4+ years of news, radio, or podcast production
  • Demonstrated experience working in daily news or political news or topical comedy
  • Strong editorial judgement about the news that matters and exceptional creativity in how to cover it
  • Understanding of journalism and journalistic ethics
  • A passion and day-to-day interest in politics, the news, as well as pop culture

Sr. Producer, Current Podcasts

 

We are looking to hire an LA-based senior producer who would be responsible for content, logistics, and production of our current podcasts. The ideal candidate would be an established audio producer with significant experience producing and a track record of success and experience managing a team. The candidate must have a clear idea of the Crooked brand, have exceptional skills in talent management, and basic audio production knowledge.

 

Day-to-day duties include:

  • Supervising associate producers, talent network management and production partners
  • Managing brainstorms, booking and scheduling of panelists and co-hosts, segment construction
  • Working with Sales team to ensure necessary ads have been recorded
  • Overseeing pre-production / production schedules as well as set run of show, week- over-week, from prep to actual show
  • Liaising with producers and editors on notes and edits for final cut for podcast distribution
  • Liaising with our studio manager to book studio time based on needed locations
  • Collaborating with hosts on building episodes by providing segment ideas, creative, and technical support
  • Working with hosts and producers on arranging any necessary elements to complete episodes (i.e. research, video + visual assets)
  • Oversee and vet detailed production budgets
  • Coordinating cross-departmental efforts to build, and publicize our programming through video, social, design and marketing efforts

The ideal candidate has worked in a digital media company or for a quickly growing startup environment. Day-to-day duties include:

  • Manage payroll, benefits, and compliance
