DONE DEAL

Humanitarian aid groups are cautiously optimistic that the Israel-Hamas ceasefire dealĀ will allow them to deliver much-needed assistance to Palestinians in Gaza.

  • Israel and Hamas agreed to a deal today to pause fighting in the Gaza Strip after 15 months of war. Hamas will release 33 hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian women and children who were imprisoned by Israel,Ā the Associated Press reports. The deal, which starts on Sunday, also includes a limited withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory, and a surge in humanitarian aid for Gazans. Thereā€™s no official confirmation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
  • ā€œThis agreement brings overdue hope and relief to Gaza,ā€ Oxfam America President Abby Maxman toldĀ What A Day. The deal will allow her organization to ā€œtake stock and do all we can, along with partner organizations, to rush necessities to those who need them most.ā€ However, she cautioned that thereā€™s ā€œstill uncertaintyā€ about aid deliveries as the three-phase deal plays out.
  • The U.N. Relief and Works Agency, a massive organization that provides aid to Gaza, also celebrated the decision: ā€œWhatā€™s needed is rapid, unhindered and uninterrupted humanitarian access and supplies to respond to the tremendous suffering caused by this war,ā€ UNRWA Commissioner-General Phllippe LazzariniĀ said today. But will the new ceasefire deal help the agency, which isĀ currently bannedĀ by Israel, boost aid deliveries? ā€œNo idea. Too soon to know,ā€ a senior UNRWA employee toldĀ What A Day.

President-elect Donald Trump took credit for the dealĀ coming together,Ā sparking a debateĀ about who should receive the kudos.

  • ā€œThis EPIC ceasefire agreement could have only happened as a result of our Historic Victory in November, as it signaled to the entire World that my Administration would seek Peace and negotiate deals to ensure the safety of all Americans, and our Allies,ā€ Trump spewed on Truth Social. In December, Trump said that Hamas would have ā€œALL HELL TO PAYā€ if the group didnā€™t release hostages by Inauguration Day. President Joe Biden also took credit today ā€” considering his administration spent months in negotiations between several countries. A reporter asked Biden: Do you or Trump deserve credit? Biden responded: ā€œIs that a joke?ā€
  • Either way, Israelā€™s warĀ may not be over. Trump will have to engage in diplomacy with Israel and Hamas mediators ā€” and his team isnā€™t likely to be sympathetic to the Palestinian plight. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Trumpā€™s pick to be ambassador to Israel, onceĀ said that Palestinians donā€™t exist. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), his nominee to be secretary of state, argued during his confirmation hearing today that IsraelĀ hasnā€™t ā€œdeliberately targetedā€ civiliansĀ in Gaza. ā€œInnocent people are caught up in [war] and thatā€™s true of every conflict on the planet,ā€ Rubio said.
  • Itā€™s not that straightforward: Some Israeli soldiers deployed to Gaza refuse to continue fighting because of Israelā€™sĀ attacks that have killed civilians. One officer recently described how soldiers were ordered to shoot anyone who entered an Israeli-controlled buffer zone, including a teenager: ā€œHe died as part of a bigger story. As part of the policy of staying there and not seeing Palestinians as people,ā€ the officer told theĀ Associated Press. As many as 64,000 Palestinians may have been killed in Gaza in the first nine months of the war, which is 40 percent higher than previously estimated,Ā according to a recent analysis. Sixty-two Palestinians have been killed in the past day,Ā according to local health officials.

President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have refusedĀ to stop supporting Israel, even after theĀ U.S. found that Israel had deliberately blocked foodĀ from entering Gaza. The Trump administration isnā€™t expected to be much better

BONDI, PAM BONDI

It looks like Pam Bondi, whoā€™s poised to be the next attorney general, passed Donald Trumpā€™s loyalty test today.

During her confirmation hearing, Bondi was repeatedly asked basic questions like, ā€œDid President Joe Biden win the 2020 election?ā€ and ā€œDo you agree with Trump that Jan. 6 rioters are ā€˜patriotsā€™?ā€ She dodged every time. It got especially heatedĀ when Democratic lawmakers pressed BondiĀ on whether there was election fraud in the 2020 election.

ā€œThe partisanship, the weaponization will be gone,ā€ Bondi said of the Justice Department under her leadership, offering little reassurance that sheā€™s being truthful. ā€œI will not target people simply because of their political affiliation. Justice will be administered evenhandedly throughout this country.ā€

Itā€™s likely sheā€™ll be confirmed given her background as Florida attorney general. It also seems likely sheā€™ll bend to Trumpā€™s whims, considering her track record with MAGA: She promoted Trumpā€™sĀ election fraud claims, andĀ decided not to pursue legal actionĀ against Trump University in 2013 after receiving a $25,000 donation from one of Trumpā€™s charities. Bondi denies that the donation is related to her not pursuing action.

At the hearing, Bondi did, however, indicate that sheā€™ll keep Kash Patel, Trumpā€™s comically unqualified pick to be FBI director, in line if heā€™s confirmed.

ā€œThere will never be an enemies list at the Department of Justice,ā€ Bondi said. Reminder: PatelĀ literallyĀ published an enemies listĀ vowed to target people he views as ā€œgovernment gangsters.ā€

ā€œIs it like the old Playboy Magazine ā€” you have essays there by the modern day equivalent of Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley Jr.?ā€Ā  ā€” Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito,Ā asking if people visit Pornhub to read articlesĀ during a hearing about minors having access to pornography.

NEWS NEWS NEWS

Donald Trump is considering unconventional ways to save TikTok, the wildly popular video-sharing platform which he credits with helping him win the election. One way involves issuing an executive order suspending the sale or ban of the Chinese-owned app for 60 to 90 days. My hunch: He canā€™t stand the thought of the ā€œTrump Danceā€ fading into oblivion.

Oil bigwig Chris Wright, Trumpā€™s pick for energy secretary,Ā has argued that climate change doesnā€™t make wildfires more severe or frequent, despite, yā€™know, scientists widely believing that it does. His view drew scrutiny during his confirmation today, in light of the devastating L.A. wildfires that are still raging.

Donald Trump is encouraging tech bro Vivek RamaswamyĀ to consider taking Vice President-elect JD Vanceā€™s vacant senate seat if heā€™s offered the position by the stateā€™s governor, theĀ Washington PostĀ reports. Ramaswamy pulled out of the running in November after Trump named him to help lead the Department of Government Efficiency.

Only 2 in 10 Americans approve of talkshow host Pete HegsethĀ becoming Trumpā€™s defense secretary, according to a new poll. Is it the reports of himĀ drunkenly dancing with strippers,Ā guzzling three gin-and-tonics at a weekday breakfast, orĀ opposing women serving in the militaryĀ thatā€™s turning them off? Our friends at theĀ What A DayĀ podcast spoke with Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) about the hearing ā€”Ā check it out.

Trump is raking in so much dough from corporationsĀ and wealthy donors that heā€™s expected to raise $500 million by the summer, Axios reports. Since he canā€™t run again (fingers crossed), much of that is likely to go to helping his allies win office.

Trump received the ā€œfirst-ever Presidential Commemorative InauguralĀ Diet Coke bottleā€ from Coca Cola. Now my favorite drink is gonna taste like chemicalsĀ and disappointment. Great.
